Native and Exotic

Over 300 different fruits from all over the world and freshly picked vegetables are daily offered at Meinl’s fruit & vegetables department, from the baby pineapple to mini asparagus, from edible flowers to radicchio trevigano to lemongrass. Our fruit and vegetable experts spare no efforts to offer the freshest fruits and best vegetables and have, with their innovative selection, triggered many a trend.


Consumers can select between up to twelve sorts of potatoes, for example, among them truffle potatoes, salad, and mealy burls from the Waldviertel, the batate which is becoming more and more popular, and in spring early red potatoes from France.

We also sell up to 13 different sorts of lettuce – from lollo rosso and biondo to crisp escariol and batavia to nutty-mild eichblattsalat, as well as a great variety of apples and pears.


Tomato fans are also richly rewarded; pear-shaped, round, small, fleshy, cherry-shaped, with few seeds, red or yellow– the multitude of pomodori can be, depending on the season, overwhelming.

Asparagus aficionados can purchase the fine spears at Julius Meinl am Graben all through the year, but during the asparagus season it is mostly the regal variety from the Marchfeld which is offered; white and violet solo asparagus, asparagus tips, vegetable asparagus, baby asparagus, crimson asparagus – the list is endless!

The selection is rounded off by an exclusive selection of exotic rarities: jackfruit peeled or in chips, a range of passion fruits, freshly-picked mangos and papayas from south east Asian regions as well as Thai basil for Asian cuisine.


The aromatic and tempting offer of fresh herbs which we get from local farmers, inspire us to want to cook in an innovative way. Thyme, tarragon, mint, rosemary and in spring waldmeister, wild garlic, watercress and sorrel are there to be picked, colourfully supplemented by a multitude of pretty edible flowers.

Apple-Poppy Seed Cake


3 eggs
150 g butter
100 g poppy seeds
100 g flour
150 g sugar
300 g cox orange apple
vanilla sugar


Peel apples and cut into columns. Stir all other ingredients with a mixer 5 minutes. Put the dough in 24 cm Diameter springform pan, confirm with the apple slices and bake for 45 minutes at 185 ° C.
